Mass on Texas Death Row:
Prayer of the Faithful

What was this project?

As part of a larger project administering a national conference for prison, jail, and detention ministers,  I was asked to help coordinate a liturgy on Texas Women’s Death Row, including writing the intentions for Bishop Joe Vásquez. The intentions needed to be of significance for the women house on death row, and for the conference attendees who would later prayerfully view the liturgy.

What was involved?

In addition to musically transcribing the rote Mass parts, formatting the worship aid, and providing administrative support the Catholic Prison Ministries Coalition asked me to write the Prayers of the Faithful for the Mass. Taking into consideration the circumstances of the women on death row, the words they shared with CPMC, the ministers in the coalition network, and the usual prescribed formula for composing Prayers of the Faithful, I drafted a set of prayers. Attempting to reflect the expansiveness of Our Creator I put forth seven names or attributes of God.

• Almighty • Compassion • Mercy • Hope • Love • Nearness • All

The Prayers of the Faithful can be viewed here.
